Arrgh Matey!

Today we learned about pirates. We talked about who they are, and what they do. Some of the replies we got were: “They are boat people!”, “Pirates ride ships!”, and “It’s Captain Jack Sparrow!”. We also talked about what pirates looked like.

They wear triangle shaped hats, have an eye patch, and carry a telescope!

The telescope has a long history dating back to the early 1600’s. The tool was used to magnify the view of landmarks, islands, and enemy ships.

From Lippershey, to Galileo, to Newton, to Hadley, the telescope has gone through many changes. The pirates were known to call telescopes a “Bring ‘em Closer”. They were also known as a Spy Glass.

So let’s grab a Bring ‘em Closer, and see what we can find!
